This print version of the new Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) K–10 Syllabus identifies the knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes that NSW primary students are expected to develop. PDHPE is a mandatory subject from Kindergarten to Year 10.
Teachers have the flexibility to make decisions about the sequence of learning, the emphasis given to certain content and any adjustments required based on the needs, interests, abilities and prior learning of their students..
PDHPE is of increasing importance as it reflects the dynamic nature of health, safety, wellbeing and participation in physical activity in the context of a diverse and rapidly changing society.
The syllabus aims to enable students to develop the knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes required to lead and promote healthy, safe and active lives.
The syllabus features 5 propositions that guide teaching, learning and assessment. These include: a focus on educative purposes, a strengths-based approach, valuing movement, developing health literacy and including a critical inquiry approach.
The PDHPE syllabus addresses contemporary health and physical activity concepts important to students including: alcohol and other drugs; food and nutrition; personal identity; mental health and wellbeing; relationships; sexuality and sexual health; safety; health benefits of physical activity; fundamental movement skills; rhythmic and expressive movement; individual/group/team physical activities; initiative/challenge physical activities; aquatics; and lifelong physical activities Included with the syllabus are a guide, parents’ guide and advice on assessment.
